1. General Inquiries

a. What is the Cedega Gaming Service?

The Cedega Gaming Service brings its Members the thrill of blockbuster gaming on Linux. Cedega enables Linux gamers to play Windows titles on the operating system of their choice. Triple-A titles such as World of Warcraft, Command & Conquer 3, Team Fortress 2 and many, many more are playable on Linux today with Cedega.

There is no better way to play games on Linux!

b. What games can I play using the Cedega Gaming Service?

The Cedega Gaming Service has Certified over 40 games. In addition the Cedega Games Database contains information on over 1500 games and hundreds of those have been rated as Working by Members of the Cedega Community. For more information on exactly which games are working check out the Cedega Gaming Service.

i. What is the Cedega Games Database?

The Cedega Gaming Service is not just playing games on Linux it also connects you with thousands of other Linux gamers allowing Members to share information, tips, experiences and help direct the development of Cedega. With this strong and vibrant Community behind them, Members will be able to play the games they love and connect with others who love them as well.

We believe in the voice of the Linux community. As such we have designed our GamesDB so Cedega Members can submit new game titles to the database as well as rate a game's playability in Cedega. All ratings in the GamesDB are assigned by the Cedega Member community. We recommend trying games with a playability rating of 3 or better.

ii. What are Cedega Certified Games?

A game that is listed as Cedega Certified has been tested by both Cedega Gaming Service staff and the Cedega Beta Team on a wide variety of systems and hardware and is known to work on systems that meet the requirements for Cedega. Cedega Gaming Service Members may request assistance from Support Staff to get Certified games working on their system.

Cedega Certified games may not be 100% working or may have issues on some setups, distributions or hardware, however, core game functionality is supported. Check the Games Database page for more details on known issues.

Games that are not listed as Cedega Certified may still work but technical assistance is not available from Cedega Gaming Service staff. Community support is still available for these titles. See the Games Database page for more information on non-Certified games working status and known issues.

If you would like to recommend a particular title for official Certification, please create a Poll for our community to vote on.

iii. What is the GDDB?

The Games Disc Database (GDDB) is a set of Cedega configuration files which contain settings needed for optimal installation/playability of officially-supported titles.

TransGaming frequently updates these configurations as improvements are made. It is advised that if your game title is listed in the GDDB to use the GDDB settings for best results.

Note that the GamesDB and GDDB are not one and the same -- the GDDB is built-in to Cedega and is not available for viewing online at this time. The GamesDB is user-generated while the GDDB is maintained internally by TransGaming for officially-supported titles only.

c. Can other (3D) Windows applications run on Cedega? (ie. 3DSMax, AutoCAD, etc.)

Other Windows applications may work, however, we don't support or catalogue the configuration or system tuning that is likely required to make those applications work seamlessly. Running other applications under Cedega may yield undesired results and is not recommended nor supported.

d. What are the System Requirements for Cedega to run?

The operating system core requirements are a Linux Kernel 2.4 or higher, XFree86 4.0 (4.3 is recommended) or Xorg, and glibc 2.2 or higher. Since each game will have its own hardware specifications, we recommend for optimal gaming experience that you exceed the recommended requirements to run the game. Your system must also have the required dependencies installed in order to run Cedega (see below).

i. Minimum (Recommended) System Requirements

Cedega runs with most major Linux distributions including (but not limited to): Ubuntu, Debian, Knoppix, Linspire, Red Hat, Fedora Core, SuSE, Mandriva, Gentoo, Slackware and other GNU/Linux distributions with the appropriate dependencies installed.

Cedega is available in RPM, DEB and TGZ packages for easy installation on all major distributions of Linux. The dependencies for Cedega will differ depending on the distribution:
  • ALL: python >= 2.3, wget
  • Red Hat/Fedora Core (RPM): pygtk2 >= 2.6, gtk2 >= 2.6, dbus-python
  • SuSE (RPM): python-gtk >= 2.6, gtk2 >= 2.6, dbus-1-python
  • Mandriva (RPM): pygtk2.0 >= 2.6, pygtk2.0-libglade, gtk2 >= 2.6, dbus-python
  • Debian, Ubuntu, Linspire, Knoppix, and other Debian-based systems (DEB): libc6 >= 2.2.4-4, xlibmesa3 or libgl1, python-gtk2 >= 2.6, python-glade2, Recommended: python 2.4 and python2.4-dbus
  • Gentoo, Slackware, and similar systems (TGZ): (package names will vary by distro) x11, gtk2 >= 2.6, glade2, python gtk2 bindings and python dbus bindings

Cedega will run with both ATI and nVidia video cards. We currently recommend the nVidia GeForce class video card due to its superior Linux driver support and the availability of Pixel Shaders on nVidia FX class cards and above. Some users may experience inconsistent performance and instability with the ATI Radeon 8500 or better cards. Please refer to the release notes for recommendations on game play.

For optimal performance, your hardware must also meet or exceed the recommended system requirements necessary for the game that you are trying to run.

ii. Is Cedega compatible with 64-bit Linux Operating Systems?

Cedega is compatible with systems using 64-bit Linux distributions. Users must ensure that they have installed their distribution's 32-bit compatibility libraries. Check your distro documentation for more information on these libraries.

iii. Can Cedega run on other Unix-based operating systems such as BSD, BeOS, or MAC OS X?

Cedega is currently available for GNU/Linux only.

TransGaming actively accepts patches from the BSD community in order for Cedega to run on FreeBSD.

Cedega does not run on the PowerPC Mac OS X due to differences in the underlying architecture between PowerPC computers and x86 based computers. For TransGaming's approach for gaming on Intel Macs see Cider.

e. Does TransGaming contribute to the WineHQ project?

Before the Wine license was changed to the LGPL, TransGaming actively contributed to the Wine project. Since the LGPL changes were made, TransGaming has continued to contribute back to WineHQ wherever possible, such as DirectSound, OLE, and other areas. Our ability to contribute in all areas has been lessened to some degree by our licensing requirements.

Those wishing to view our contributions can easily find them in a search of the wine-patches archives.

At this time, TransGaming accepts payment in US dollars (USD), Euros (EUR), or Great British Pounds (GBP). For users who are conducting a transaction in USD, WorldPay accepts most major credit cards. For users who wish to pay in EUR or GBP, WorldPay accepts payments made via standard debit systems.

FuturePay is a unique service in that it frees our users from the worry of having to pay for their subscription every month by allowing users to setup a recurring payment plan that automatically charges their cards on a monthly basis.

i. What is RBS WorldPay?

RBS WorldPay is a secure internet payment service provider and is a part of The Royal Bank of Scotland Group, the 5th biggest banking group in the world,. WorldPay's online payment systems are widely used and globally acknowledged as a trusted leader in secure, multilingual and multi-currency internet payment solutions. TransGaming utilizes the services of WorldPay including the ability to setup recurring payment plans using FuturePay which allows for the convenience of monthly subscriptions to be billed automatically.

ii. Can I pay by cheque, cash, PayPal, Western Union?

At this time TransGaming can only accept payments made through our secure online credit card processing service provider, RBS WorldPay.

Users who cannot subscribe using RBS WorldPay may wish to contact one of our resellers on the Authorized Resellers List for a subscription. Some partners listed under the Cedega Reseller Program include:

d. I am having trouble logging in to my account. What do I do?

If you are having issues logging into your Cedega.com account you should first double-check that you are using the correct username and password to login. Many users that have multiple accounts (or old accounts in the past) find themselves attempting to login using an inactive account.

If you are certain you are using the correct username/password, please visit www.cedega.com/support/ for more information on how to create a Support Request. You may also try resetting your password using the password reset form (see below).

i. I have forgotten my username/password, how can I look up my login or reset my password?

If you have forgotten your username or password and would like to lookup your username or reset your password, you may do so by submitting a Password Reset request.

You will need to enter your username (if you remember it), OR your e-mail address you used when you signed up initially. By submitting this form, you will receive an e-mail containing the account's username and a new "temporary" password which you may only use once to login to the account, at which point you will have to set a new password.

ii. I am receiving an error when trying to login. Help!

If you are receiving an error logging in not mentioned in this FAQ, please let us know at accounts@cedega.com

Please be sure to include your account's username and e-mail address (please send it from the e-mail address we have on file) and most importantly the error message that you are receiving when you try and login.

As a side-note, be sure you have JavaScript and Cookies enabled when trying to login.

e. I never received my password e-mail. What do I do?

Please note that many free e-mail providers such as Hotmail may "flag" these e-mails as SPAM (or "Junk") -- before filling out a second request, be sure to check your appropriate junk folder(s) for the message. It is also a good idea to add "@cedega.com" to your e-mail Safe List.

If you have not yet received your password e-mail, you may re-send the password reset request by submitting a Password Reset request.

You will need to enter your username (if you remember it), OR your e-mail address you used when you signed up initially. By submitting this form, you will receive an e-mail containing the account's username and a new "temporary" password which you may only use once to login to the account, at which point you will have to set a new password.

f. How can I change my e-mail address that is associated with my account?

You will need to update your e-mail address in two places: on your Cedega.com profile (under My Account and your RBS WorldPay (FuturePay) account/agreement:
  • Cedega.com
    1. Login to your Cedega.com account
    2. Click on "Modify Account"
    3. Click on "Modify User Details"
    4. Update the "User Email" field and click on "Update!" (NOTE: From here you may also opt-in/out of our TransGamer Newsletter)
  • WorldPay/FuturePay
    1. Login to RBS WorldPay
    2. Enter your credentials (user name & password) and click Login -- you should have received an e-mail from WorldPay when you subscribed containing your user name, password, and FuturePay Agreement ID. Otherwise, Get your WorldPay ID
    3. Upon login you are presented with all of the agreements that are on file for your account. Click on the applicable Agreement ID associated with your Cedega Membership to bring up the individual agreement where you can modify your contact and payment details. (*HINT: The "Merchant Reference" field will contain your Cedega user name)
    4. Click the "Change Contact Details" button
    5. Update your E-Mail and click on "Submit"

g. How can I cancel my subscription?

You can cancel your Cedega Gaming Service Membership at any time by cancelling your recurring FuturePay agreement with RBS WorldPay. For your convenience, we have streamlined this process for you by including a "Cancel" button under your My Account details. Should you experience difficulty, you can also opt to cancel your subscription by logging into RBS WorldPay and canceling your FuturePay agreement directly -- this will cancel your current payment plan so no further charges will be made. An email will be sent from RBS WorldPay confirming the cancellation of your payment plan.

To do so you will need your account e-mail address and WorldPay user ID. To determine your WorldPay user ID you will need your FuturePay agreement ID (located in your My Account details) and e-mail address. The following links will assist you:

RBS WorldPay Account Login
Get your RBS WorldPay ID (If you forgot your WorldPay credentials)

If you continue to experience difficulty, you can also e-mail our Accounts Team who can process the cancellation for you by supplying your Cedega username and e-mail address. Please note that cancellation requests via e-mail can take up to 5 days to process; it is recommended to utilize the automated methods above whenever possible to avoid an unwanted recurring transaction.

h. How can I obtain a refund? (What is your refund policy?)

Cedega Membership, like most individual members programs, have certain restrictions on cancellation. A refund is not usually considered for a subscription purchase as it activates immediately and provides access to Cedega technology downloads.

Refunds will not be issued based on technical failure of a PC game, system failure, failure to meet the minimum system requirements to run the game on your computer or for lack of enjoyment while playing the game. Please examine the Getting Started page and all related materials on Cedega.com (including this FAQ) to make sure your computer meets all requirements. We will however do our best to provide support if you are experiencing issues with the service.

Please see the Cedega Support Page for more information on obtaining support.

3. Support Inquiries

a. How do I download Cedega once I've subscribed?

Cedega is available in RPM, DEB and TGZ packages for easy installation on all major distributions of Linux. The dependencies for Cedega will differ depending on the distribution (please see the Minimum Requirements for more information).

You can download Cedega by logging in to www.cedega.com with your account and then clicking on "Downloads" and then "Cedega". After accepting the license agreement, you will be redirected to the download page which will contain all Cedega packages that are currently available. You will need to select the appropriate package for your distribution (as noted). Please refer to the "Quick Start Guide" for more information.

b. Installation and Removal

i. How do I install Cedega?

Installation of Cedega varies with each distribution. Please consult the "Quick Start Guide" available in the Member Area for specific installation instructions. Typically, you will need to first ensure all required dependencies are installed correctly (as well as your video drivers) and use the package manager associated with your distro to install the prepackaged Cedega binary.

ii. How do I remove/uninstall Cedega completely?

Uninstalling Cedega varies significantly with each version and Linux distribution. Typically, you will need to use the package manager with your distribution that you used to install the Cedega package initially.

In addition to removing Cedega using your package manager, you may also choose to remove any configuration or game files left behind. Uninstalling Cedega will not remove any associated packages. Removing Cedega via this method will remove your game files and any saved game information completely from your hard drive. Proceed with caution. It is recommended that if you are planning on re-installing Cedega to backup your game files prior to performing a removal.

Example: To completely remove Cedega using dpkg (such as on Ubuntu), you would type the following:
      $ sudo dpkg -r cedega-small
      $ rm -rf ~/.cedega
      $ rm -rf ~/.cedegarc
      $ rm -rf ~/.transgaming_global

iii. How do I backup my game folder?

It is generally a good idea to have a backup of your game folder if you decide to reinstall or migrate your installation, or if you are patching your game and would like to revert to a previous version rather than reinstalling.

Backing up your game files is fairly easy to do. All games are located under ~/.cedega/ and can be copied safely outside of that directory structure. If you wish to copy your game backup back into the Cedega installation, place the game files you backed up earlier back into this folder with its existing structure in place.

c. Updating Cedega

i. How do I update Cedega?

Cedega can be set to check for updates every time it is started by selecting the Enable Automatic updates option at install time or by selecting TransGaming -> TransGamer Account.

You can manually check for udpates using the TransGaming -> Check for Updates option. Both methods for performing updates requrie an active internet connection.

ii. How often are updates released?

TransGaming strives to release new versions of Cedega on a timely basis and all timelines are documented in the Monthly Development Reports available on www.cedega.com

While there is quite a bit of development going on 'behind the scenes' at TransGaming, we don't typically disclose a regular release schedule. Our Beta Team has access to all of our latest engine builds.

All of our updates go through a rigorous Quality Assurance testing process to ensure that our users have an enjoyable Linux gaming experience.

In addition to engine and UI updates, our GDDB configurations are updated on a regular basis as we see fit to ensure that our supported games using these entries are installed correctly and are played using the optimum settings that we have determined.

d. How do I update/patch my game(s)

To update/patch a specific game already installed with Cedega, you will need to do the following:
  • Open the Cedega UI
  • Click the "Install" button
  • Select the "Game Folder" the game is already installed in (the game that you want to patch)
  • If the game has an applicable GDDB entry, select it in the dropdown.
  • In the "Installer" field, click "Browse" and point to the patch/update file that you downloaded
  • Click "Continue" to start the installer

Please note that some games may require special instructions for updating/patching. Please consult our Member Forums or Unofficial Wiki for further instructions for your specific title and patch version.

e. What type(s) of support is available?

TransGaming offers technical support to active subscribers. The most beneficial resource to our subscribers is the TransGamer community itself.
  • Member Forums -- Users can trade support tips, game hints, or just chat with other members of the Cedega community on any game title, distribution or any other aspect of Cedega in the User Forums
  • IRC -- Users may also chat on IRC at: irc.freenode.net in #cedega
  • www.cedega.com/support/ -- All support channels are outlined here, including how to submit a Support Request to our team.

i. Where do I go for support/troubleshooting?

If your question has not been answered here, please visit www.cedega.com/support/ for more information on how to obtain support.

ii. Do you offer support in other languages?

At this time, English is the only language we are able to offer support in. TransGaming recognizes that the Internet is a global village and will use every effort possible to accommodate support requests from around the world.

Our friendly user-community has been known to help non-english speaking users on both the Member Forums and unofficial IRC channel.

f. I think I've found a bug. How do I report it to you guys?

If you believe you have found a bug in our software, you may let us know via e-mail at support@cedega.com

Please take care to describe exactly what occurred and how it occurred (steps you undertook leading up to the specific problem) and see if you can reproduce it. Be sure to have any relevant information such as your system information from Cedega, the game's version (including patches) and Cedega engine version that was used. You may also include screenshots and your Cedega and game configuration files. Note that if you are not able to reproduce the issue systematically, then it is not a bug, and not worth submitting. It would be worth posting on our Member Forums however, to see if other users may have encountered the same issue.

Please note that we may not be able to follow-up with you regarding your report in most circumstances.

g. How do I become a member of your Beta team?

The Cedega Beta Team opens up enrolment from time to time, and spaces are limited.

Do you really love gaming? Do you want access to the latest in Cedega development? Are you willing to help the entire Cedega community?

If you answered yes to any of those questions, then you are a perfect fit for the Cedega Beta Team.

To request enrolment, please send an e-mail to betaleader@cedega.com including the following information:
  • Your Name
  • Your Cedega Account Name
  • Your system information located in the Cedega System/Hardware Information page
  • Two or three lines of text telling us why you would be a good addition to the team (a list of games is also good to include)

Enrolment is limited so if you are interested in joining the Cedega Beta Team be sure to act on this opportunity today!

h. My question isn't answered here, what do I do?

Please visit www.cedega.com/support/ for more information including how to open a Support Request with our team.
